Date/Location12/11/2002 Memorial Union
Session Length270 min.
AttendeesBill Palecek, David Solie, Everett Proctor, Joel Uckelman, Mike O'Brien, Tim Achee, Todd Jensen, Mike Knop
Games PlayedEuphrat und Tigris, Trans America, Hornochsen, Hornochsen, Cartagena, Kardinal und König, Metro, Lord of the Ring: The Confrontation
SummaryAnother good sessions tonight. We were put in the Profile room, which was next to the "nap" room. For stress-relief from studying for finals, the Union had a room set up where students could come and take a nap or get a massage. So, with all of those nappers down the hall, our first game was "name the loudest game you can think of". Pass the Bomb and Pit were the winners I think. Fortunately the nap room was only open until 6, so we didn't really disturb anybody.
Euphrat und Tigris
Played ByBill P. Everett P. Joel U. Todd J.
SummaryIt had been a long time since we had played Tigris and Euphrates, so Joel, Todd and myself decided to give it a go. Bill arrived just in time to jump in. So did David, but he decided to sit out and wait for the next game. The game quickly developed into two large kingdoms: one in the middle that I was pretty much able to keep control of, and one in the corner that was disputed, but I think Bill did the best job of getting victory points off of the monument built in it. There were a couple of battles between these two cities before they finally merged into one, and I was able to remain dominate in the same colors as the monuments. I was also able to collect the most gold, so I easily came away with the win.

Trans America
Played ByBill P. Everett P. Joel U. Todd J.
SummaryWhen we got through with the Tigris & Euphrates game, David and Mike were playing LOTR: The Confrontation, so we played a quick game of Trans America while waiting for them to finish. Normally Todd has done poorly in this game, losing 6 or 7 points a round while everyone else only loses 2 or 3; but this time Todd's fortune was reversed. He went out first on the first round, catching the rest of us with 6 to 8 moves left. With Todd's luck, even such a great lead was no sure thing, but he was able to hang on and win the game after three rounds.

Hornochsen
Played ByBill P. David S. Everett P. Joel U. Todd J. Mike K.
SummaryHornochsen is the sequel to Take 6! (at this point, Todd would like to point out that it should have been translated as 6 Takes!). The deck consists of cards numbered from 1 through 98, with each card having 1 to 8 bull symbols on it. Some of the cards have green bulls which are positive points, and some of the cards have red bulls worth negative points. Each turn a player can play 1 to 3 cards onto the 15 (for 6 players) stacks in the middle of the table. The rule for playing cards is that you must play your card on the highest card on the table that is lower than the card you are playing. If you play the fifth card on a stack, you take the stack. Each player also has two special cards, one that doubles the score of whoever takes the card, and one that adds 5 points to whoever takes the card. Once all of the stacks have been taken, everybody adds up their bulls, and the highest score wins. It is a little more strategical and requires a little more thought than Take 6!, which makes it a little less of a light group game. For those reasons, I like Hornochsen a little better than Take 6!, but for the same reasons Mike likes it a little less than Take 6!. We played two games, during the first of which Bill decided he no chance, so tried to get the lowest score he could.

Cartagena
Played ByEverett P. Mike O. Todd J.
SummaryDavid had to leave, but Mike O. and Tim arrived, so with 7 players, we broke up into two groups. Three of us played Cartagena (Candyland for adults). At one point I thought I had a good lead, with both Mike and Todd having 4 pirates behind my trailing pirate, but Mike made a few good chains and quickly moved a bunch of his pirates into the boat to take the win.

Kardinal und König
Played ByBill P. Joel U. Tim A. Mike K.
SummaryWeb of Power was the other game when we split into two groups. Bill and Joel had played this before, but both had wanted to play it again, so they taught the rules to Mike K. and Tim. I didn't see much of the game, but by the scores it looks like Bill ran away with it.

Metro
Played ByBill P. Everett P. Joel U. Mike O. Todd J.
SummaryThe evening was winding down, so we needed a fairly quick game that could handle the five of us that were left. We didn't want to play another game of Trans America, so Metro was about the only thing we had on hand that fit the bill. Joel played the first two rounds thinking he was blue, which was really Bill's color. So it's no real surprise that Bill won and Joel came in last. Tim, who was watching the game rated the game 8.5, and said that it is one of the three best rail games that he has experienced.

Lord of the Ring: The Confrontation
Played ByDavid S. Mike K.
SummaryWhile 4 of us were playing Tigris & Euphrates, David and Mike decided to learn how to play LOTR: The Confrantation. David's notes: "We switched sides and played two games. Dave started with good, and was able to sneak Frodo into Mordor. When Dave played Evil, he was able to find out where Mike played Frodo, and attacked with orcs. Sam bravely took the hit, but was unable to stop the orcs. Mike thought that he could still win by getting 3 characters into Mordor. Both Mike & Dave believe the Good side has at very least a slight advantage."
